Panettiere's song for the film is called "I Can Do It Alone" and she just released a music video for the track, which features the "Scream 4" star -- wearing black suspenders and a grey shirt- - singing into a mic. Scenes from "Hoodwinked Too!" are also included

The tune is rock-themed and it's pretty catchy. Panettiere's voice sounds great on the track and we wouldn't mind hearing more music from her in the future. Just putting that out there, Hayden!

NASSAU, Bahamas – Dozens of beauty queens sporting sunglasses and toting suitcases made an informal parade down a wide hotel hallway Sunday, thrilling tourists as they headed to dress rehearsal hours before the Miss Universe pageant.

They walked quietly, pausing only to wave and smile for tourists had gathered at the Atlantis Hotel to buy last-minute tickets for the event. Some bystanders raised cameras or hoisted children on their shoulders for a better view.

The more than 80 contestants will appear in cocktail dresses when they walk onstage as the pageant starts. Judges will announce the 15 finalists, who will reappear in bathing suits. The final 10 will be chosen before the evening gown segment and the final five will take questions from the judges.

Many contestants have suffered from dehydration in recent weeks, and Jewel Selver, Miss Turks and Caicos, went home Saturday to recuperate, said Esther Swan, Miss Universe spokeswoman. Selver was one of eight contestants from Caribbean islands.

A winner will be crowned by the reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela.

Some 2,700 tickets had been sold by late Saturday out of the 3,100 available, according to tourism officials.

The televised event includes musical performances by Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. Hosts are Billy Bush, co-anchor of "Access Hollywood," and Claudia Jordan, former Miss Rhode Island USA who has appeared on several TV shows. Judges include actor Dean Cain and supermodel Valeria Mazza.

Dozens of tourists milled about the media center at the Atlantis hotel, trying to slip past security and get an unauthorized glimpse of the ballroom where the event would be held.

They stopped chattering and stared as pageant co-owner Donald Trump strolled by with two bodyguards.

"Incredible!" proclaimed Frederic Battut, who flew in from Paris to watch the event. His companion, Fernando Alzate, wore a T-shirt emblazoned with Miss Colombia's name. But contest officials told him he would not be admitted unless he found a jacket for the event.

Tourism officials in the Bahamas hoped the pageant will stimulate an economy hard hit by the global economic crisis: The Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma hotel announced in May that it would close, and pageant host the Atlantis dismissed about 800 employees this season.

By Saturday night, about 2700 tickets for the show were sold of the 3100 available, said Glenda Johnson of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

NBC will provide live coverage of the event, featuring musical talents Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland.

Ingrid Stuart from Pembroke Pines, Florida, bought tickets to celebrate her niece's 21st birthday.

"It's a historic event for the Bahamas," said the native islander.

By now, Michelle Obama has firmly established her sartorial right to bare arms. But baring thighs may be another matter.

Photographs of the first lady descending the steps of Air Force One in shorts have the media in a sweat. Some are saying Mrs. Obama— on her way to the Grand Canyon for a family vacation — may have revealed too much skin.

Mrs. Obama is no stranger to public scrutiny over her fashion decisions, including exposing her bare arms or wearing expensive sneakers to a soup kitchen. When Anya Strzemien, style editor at The Huffington Post, saw Obama's shorts, she knew there would be interest.

"I thought the fact that she wore shorts was newsworthy because she's the first first lady to wear shorts on Air Force One," Strzemien said. "I was interested as a newsperson because it was a first. A lot of things the Obamas have done have been firsts."

She posted a poll for readers to explain what they thought: Most were in favor of the outfit, but others thought the shorts were inappropriate or too short.

NBC's "Today" show poll had similar results with a whopping 300,000 people responding to the vote. The blog post was the show's most commented-on of 2009, said Dee Dee Thomas, a "Today" senior producer.

What does this show?

"That people love talking about Michelle Obama," Thomas said. "She's pushing the envelope on how we see the first lady."

And it's clear the media loves talking about Michelle Obama, too. Many news outlets rallied to the first lady's defense, noting that she was on vacation when she wore the shorts over the weekend, in sweltering desert heat.

"What should she have worn to the Grand Canyon? A tweed pantsuit? A ballgown? What do you wear on your summer vacation?" asked Elizabeth Snead of the Los Angeles Times.

But others wondered from whom, exactly, the media was defending the first lady.

"Everyone is up in arms — if by 'everyone' you mean no one, or rather a large, shadow-y group of no ones," Kate Dailey wrote for Newsweek. "August is a slow news month, and covering people who are actually shocked and outraged about health care can only fill so many minutes in the Twitterfied news cycle."

True, there were critics online, as there tend to be.

"Why not wear linen pants ... more tasteful," Charlie Smith, of Montgomery, Ala., wrote on the "Today" site. "She may have been on vacation ... but she should respect the Office of the President and the USA."

But it was clear most responses fell firmly on the side of shorts.

"First Lady Michelle Obama looks great in her shorts and it shouldn't even be a news worthy issue ... Leave her alone," wrote Joann Begonja, of North Bellmore, N.Y.

"Get a grip folks — these aren't 'Daisy Duke' shorts," echoed John Johnson of Dover, Ohio. "Looks O.K. to me and I am NOT an Obama fan by any stretch of the imagination!"

Mrs. Obama's office had no comment on the matter.

Thomas, the "Today" producer, said she wasn't surprised by the support for the outfit.

"I would be surprised to hear of any woman in her 40s who has not worn shorts," she said. "She's a mother of two tweens on vacation in the hottest place in the country."

Mary Tomer, founder of the New York City-based blog Mrs-O.org, which chronicles Mrs. Obama's style, said the brouhaha over her legs is media-created.

"From what I can tell most people are wondering how this became major news," Tomer said. "Who doesn't wear shorts while hiking in the Grand Canyon in mid-August with your family?"

It's real-world style that makes Mrs. Obama a fashion icon, said Mandi Norwood, author of the book "Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion." She cannot be expected to be a practical, down-to-earth woman, but also dressed up in pencil skirts and designer shoes all the time.

"She's comfortable in her own skin," she said. "This is a very practical statement by a very practical person."

Norwood said she didn't think the choice of shorts was the most flattering for Obama, but that the whole conversation about it is a "ridiculous style storm."

Still, don't expect people to stop talking about her clothing.

"We draw conclusions from what she wears because that's all we have to go on," Norwood said. "But also, it's fun."

SINKING SPRING, Pa. -- Police in eastern Pennsylvania say they responded to an argument at the home of Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of the TLC show "Jon & Kate Plus 8."

Lower Heidelberg police say they calmed the situation down after going to the home. There were no arrests or citations. Police did not say who was involved in the incident or cite the reason for the argument.

The TLC show is back on the air after a hiatus following the Gosselins' breakup in June. New episodes document the Gosselins "separately parenting" their eight children.

The home is about 80 kilometres northwest of Philadelphia.

A TLC spokeswoman declined comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

LOS ANGELES – Official Michael Jackson merchandise will soon arrive on store shelves, but the fate of a proposed tour of the King of Pop's memorabilia remains in limbo after the singer's mother expressed renewed concerns on Monday.

Attorneys for Katherine Jackson withdrew their objections to an agreement with merchandiser Bravado to bring everything from Jackson trading cards, apparel and cell phone themes to consumers.

But her objections remain a roadblock to a deal that would put some of her son's prized items on display later this year. That tour was intended to coincide with the release of a major movie featuring his final rehearsals for a series of London shows.

Burt Levitch, an attorney for Jackson's mother, Katherine, said her objections were over concerns about her son's legacy, as well as the split of proceeds from the memorabilia tour with concert promoter AEG Live.

Attorneys for AEG and the current administrators of Jackson's estate wanted the memorabilia tour approved on Monday, but Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff instead scheduled an evidentiary hearing to determine if the deal represented the best arrangement for Jackson's estate.

Katherine Jackson and her three grandchildren are set to receive the vast majority of the King of Pop's estate. An attorney appointed to represent the children's interests said Monday she thought the deal should be approved.

Kathy Jorrie, an attorney for AEG, said the memorabilia exhibition faces a tight deadline and the company's interest might wane if the tour isn't approved soon. She said the company was not interested in renegotiating the deal.

AEG wants the memorabilia tour to open at the same time as a movie using footage of Jackson's final rehearsals. The deal is expected to generate up to $6 million for the estate, said Howard Weitzman, an attorney for the current administrators of the estate.

Columbia Pictures paid $60 million for the rights to the film based on the Jackson footage, and Jackson's estate is slated to receive 90 percent of the film's profits.

One of the concessions Katherine Jackson is apparently seeking is the authority to sign off on the deal. Beckloff said he was inclined to reject that argument.

"She doesn't own the property," Beckloff said. "There's no reason to make her a signatory to those agreements."

But Beckloff said he wasn't sure that he could grant the estate's administrators approval to enter into the deal without hearing more information. The judge said he was in a difficult position and was concerned that delays in approving the deal — which was first proposed nearly two weeks ago — are hurting the estate.

'I feel it's important. I love those kids so much. We've had great times together. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing speaking out. But I'm not trying to make any claim on anything. Even if it's proven Paris is biologically mine I wouldn't see her as anything other than Michael's daughter. He raised her.

Cable a la carte fan Parents Television Council is hitching its latest call for "cable choice" to the upcoming Comedy Central roast of Joan Rivers Aug. 9.

In an advisory to its members, it warns that the show will likely contain explicit dialog and innuendo, though it does point out as part of the warning that a preview of the show on the Comedy Central Web site contains the parental warning: "Explicit Language, Viewer Discretion Advised."

"This type of show is one of the main reasons why consumers want the ability to choose and pay for only the cable networks they want through some form of cable choice," said PTC President Tim Winter in announcing the member warning.

PTC also plans to contact all the show's sponsors "if the content of this year's broadcast comes even close to that of prior years."

The Comedy Central roasts are raunchy and ribald, but, according to a veteran of the Friar's Club roasts, on which the Comedy Central roast is patterned (the channel broadcast a number of Friar's roasts before launching its own franchise), the Comedy Central versions are actually less raunchy than the originals.

Among the many who have willingly subjected themselves to that Friar's punishment have been Matt Lauer, Drew Carey, Johnny Carson, David Frost, Richard Belzer, and Whoopi Goldberg.

"The roast is designed to appeal to the Comedy Central audience, not the PTC audience and is scheduled accordingly," said Comedy Central spokeswoman Aileen Budow.

A single scene in the movie Dave, a political comedy about an imposter in the White House, probably does the best job of summing up most American political trips to Africa. In his first appearance, halfway through the movie, a dour-looking Ben Kingsley, playing the vice president, appears in the Oval Office bearing fertility beads from Togo and a giant hat from the people of Burundi. He had been sent on an extended tour through the continent by a president determined to strip him of all power and influence. "They know hats in Burundi," the president responds. Africa is a punch line. It may be a place where do-gooders can make a difference; it's just not where the big dogs make their mark.

But the Obama administration is putting Africa front and center this summer, hoping to demonstrate that the continent will no longer be sidelined in American foreign policy. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton touched down in Nairobi on Tuesday night, kicking off a seven-country tour of Africa's major capitals. That comes on the heels of Obama's address last month in Ghana, which, as administration officials keep telling us, marks the earliest and biggest commitment of U.S. diplomatic attention to the region of any modern presidency.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz was left shame-faced as she walked down a red carpet in a scarlet suit and blamed losing her luggage on a flight to London for the fashion faux pas.

The suits: Cavic, wearing the high-tech bodysuit, the polyurethane Arena X-Glide, at the world championships, offered to buy Phelps one, saying: "If Michael wants an Arena, he just has to say. If he wants a Jaked they don't want to give it to him for free, I'll buy it for him."

Phelps will stick with his "old school" Speedo LZR Racer.

"I'm wearing this," he said. "If he wants to wear a different suit, he can throw this one on."

For the record, Phelps was saying this after Cavic took away his world record Friday in the semifinals of the 100 fly, going 50.01 seconds. Phelps (50.48) didn't offer to buy Cavic a Speedo.

The lies: Cavic, a Serb who went by the first name Mike as he was raised in Orange County, is now living and training in Italy. The move to Europe hasn't cut into his candor quotient about Phelps and the suits.

"I think in the media, it's been portrayed he has no options," Cavic said of Phelps' suit choices. "He has some. It's a complete lie. I know he's making a lot of money from Speedo. But you know what, throughout my career I've learned this: Free will is a gift with a price tag and whatever you choose to do, you're going to pay."

The videotape: At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Cavic was out-touched by Phelps' final lunge of faith in the 100 fly, losing by one-hundredth of a second. Not only was it the seventh gold medal of Phelps' eventual eight, it represented the defining moment of the Games.

Cavic, meanwhile, has been making like a conspiracy theorist, like an Oliver Stone breaking down the tape frame by frame. Almost a year later, he is insisting that he really did win the race, blaming the Omega timing pad system, still claiming in Rome that he did, indeed, touch first in China. (Look out for the grassy knoll at the Foro Italico Saturday night.)

In lowering Phelps' world record of 50.22, which was set July 9 at nationals in Indianapolis, Cavic went out with his typical explosive start, going 22.83 in the opening 50 meters.

"He was out quick," Phelps said. "I know tomorrow that if I want to be in that race, that first 50 is going to have to be a lot closer than a second behind."

Phelps was part of one world-record effort in the 800 freestyle relay, which the U.S. won in 6:58.55. The other members of the relay were Ricky Berens, David Walters and Ryan Lochte.

The leadoff leg featured Phelps against Paul Biedermann of Germany. And Biedermann, as he had in the 200 freestyle final, easily beat Phelps again, 1:42.81 to 1:44.49.

"I actually had it in my mind, 'If you beat him one time you can beat him again,' " said Biedermann, who broke Phelps' 200 free world record Tuesday. "And it really motivated me."

Still, Biedermann vs. Phelps was overshadowed by the talk of Saturday night's showdown between Cavic and Phelps in the final.

The rivalry between Phelps and Cavic flared against the backdrop of another tumultuous day in Rome, in and out of the pool. FINA, the sport's international governing body, announced its ban of the controversial bodysuits would take effect Jan. 1.

All the while, world records continued to tumble with numbing regularity. Six more fell, bringing the total to 35 at this meet. Not all world records are created equal but Aaron Peirsol's destruction of his own mark was an impressive show of force in the 200 backstroke.

Peirsol, wearing an Arena suit from waist to ankles, went 1:51.92, beating silver medalist Ryosuke Irie of Japan by 0.59 seconds. Lochte was third.

"That was not a piece of cake," said the Orange County-raised Peirsol.

His victory was a popular one by virtue of his personality and his failure to make the finals in the 100 backstroke, a setback that seemed to affect his teammates. He watched the 100 final from the stands and said the view was hard to swallow.

"I may have been more rested than anyone else, though," said Peirsol, whose previous world record in the 200 (1:53.08) came July 11 at nationals. "It [not making the 100 final] was kind of a blessing in disguise. I wanted to race. I saw that I pulled out from the beginning feeling all right. When I kept pulling away, that was even more [motivation] just to go faster."

Peirsol said he had been fighting the longer distance.

"I've been struggling to get faster in that for many years now. Kind of when it rains, it pours, I guess," he said.

Theatre-goers in Vallejo got a furry surprise along with their movie tickets last week.

Two patrons at the Century 14 Vallejo Movie Theater tell the Times Herald they were more than halfway through Johnny Depp's latest flick, Public Enemies, when they heard the scampering of tiny feet in the aisles.

That's when they saw the tiny tails and bodies of what appeared to be rats. Linda Webb says her teenage daughter was the first to spot the rodents and yelped, "Put your feet up!"

Solano County Health inspectors searched the premises yesterday. The good news? There are no signs of rats at the theater. The bad news? The critters Webb and her daughter saw were probably mice.

Officials told the paper they found rodent droppings behind a screen and a dead mouse on a glueboard. However, they found no signs of an infestation. In fact, inspectors say the theater keeps its food areas clean and has pest control sweeps twice a month.

Inspector Joyce Benifield told the paper, "They're doing what they have to do. They're doing a pretty good job of keeping it clean. We're recommending continued pest control, checking all exterior doors for intact door sweeps, removing potential hiding places like unused tarps and sealing all gaps in the walls."

But what's the threat of a mouse stampede compared to Johnny Depp's megawatt star appeal? Mom and daughter say they stayed to watch the end of the movie -- with their purses in their laps and their feet off the floor.

Mark Cavendish of Britain captured Friday's 19th stage in a sprint finish. He became the first racer to win five stages in a single Tour since Armstrong in 2004.

"This is a high point in my career," Cavendish told French TV.

Cavendish edged Thor Hushovd of Norway and Gerald Ciolek of Germany on the relatively flat, 111-mile ride from Bourgoin-Jallieu to Aubenas. Hushovd most likely will win the green jersey awarded to the Tour's best sprinter. They all finished in 3 hours, 50 minutes, 35 seconds.

Armstrong, the seven-time champion, had the same time. He trimmed four seconds off his deficit to Contador and second-place Andy Schleck of Luxembourg.

Contador leads Schleck overall by 4:11 and Armstrong by 5:21 entering the last big stage — Saturday's 104-mile ride from Montelimar to a punishing finish up the famed Mont Ventoux.

The race ends Sunday in Paris, with what is usually a ceremonial ride on the Champs-Elysees for the rider in the yellow jersey.

Overall, Contador leads Schleck by 4:11 and Armstrong by 5:21 heading into the last big stage — Saturday's 104-mile ride from Montelimar to a punishing finish up the famed Mont Ventoux.

"It's really hard. I'd very much like there not to be a climb," Contador said, referring to the widely dreaded mountain. "There's a lot of headwind."

While his lock on the yellow jersey isn't under threat, Contador said his first job Saturday will be to defend it. He also wants to help Armstrong get a spot on the podium.

The extra four seconds that Armstrong collected by riding among the 12-man sprinters' group could come in handy because he is closely trailed in the overall standings for third.

"Tomorrow is the big day, but that's what made the ride today hard because already we're a bit into the stage (mentally)," Schleck said. "Tomorrow it's the legs that will do the talking."

Schleck said that in comparison to Mont Ventoux, L'Alpe d'Huez — another of France's most punishing climbs — is "a piece of cake."

Bradley Wiggins of Britain, a three-time Olympic pursuit champion who has fared well in the mountains this year, is fourth — 15 seconds slower than the Texan. Germany's Andreas Kloeden is fifth, 17 seconds behind his Astana teammate Armstrong.

Perhaps the top threat to Armstrong's podium hopes is Schleck's older brother, Frank. He is a strong climber who is sixth overall — 5:59 behind Contador and 38 seconds slower than Armstrong.

Well, we'll leave that to you, but we can say this for certain—Mrs. Tom Cruise's shoulder shrugs and hat jiggles may work on Broadway, but they don't hold a candle to So You Think You Can Dance's Elite Eight.

Sure, she was doing the Judy Garland "Get Happy" dance on behalf of the Dizzy Feet Foundation and she looked great in a white suit and then a little black number. Love that. And we don't doubt the half-dozen dapper dudes had no problem lifting her over their head, but, still, it kinda made us dream of the good ole days when Joey Potter sang "On My Own."

Anyhoo, Katie looking fabulous was hardly the shock of the night.

Even though the vibe was all about celebrating the 100th episode, two dancers still had to go home. Let's just say it killed Nigel Lythgoe's good time...

Sadly, Jason Glover and Janette Manrara were voted off the show.

Once Evan Kasprzak was safe—gasp!—and the male saying goodbye was either Jason or Brandon Bryant, few seemed surprised by the result. But, when Janette's name was called, even Cat Deeley couldn't hide her shock.

The host showered the shorty from Miami with kisses and declared it "the shock of the season." "I don't know what I'm going to do without you," she said.

Nigel was flabbergasted.

"Often my favorites don't win and it doesn't matter because I always transfer it over to the winner and I'm happy for them," he said. "But I have to say on this occasion—and I think I can now—that Janette, you were my favorite too. I really wanted you to win this year...It's ruined this 100th celebration for me, to be honest. I think you're absolutely fantastic and I'm really sorry to lose you. I think America got it wrong."

Wow.

Thankfully, there were still plenty of happy moments—and familiar faces— peppered throughout the night.

The milestone show opened with a Mia Michaels group routine to "One" from A Chorus Line, as well as several moving words to mark the occasion.

Mia said she "couldn't be more proud of being Mamma Mia on a show like this," while Mary Murphy said it brought her "the most brilliant dancing that I have ever seen in my entire life." Nigel said, "I think television at its best can reach out and unite a country with a shared experience."

Lastly, who didn't love revisiting Mia's "The Bench" (performed by season two's Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz-Burns) and Wade Robson's "The Hummingbird and the Flower" (with season three's Hok Konishi and Jaimie Goodwin)? And how about Wade joining the top 8 from season two in that Renaissance zombie group number, "Ramalama (Bang Bang)"?

By the end of the hour, we just wanted to shake it...and have a bite of that confetti-covered cake.

Kelis has given birth to a boy.

The singer is believed to have delivered the baby in a New York hospital yesterday, after going into labour on July 21, according to MTV reports.

The child's father Nas - who is estranged from Kelis - was not allowed to be present at the birth.

A source said: "Nas is in New York City, anxiously awaiting the arrival of his son. It was his intention to be there for the birth, but unfortunately he has not been allowed to be present.

"While this is clearly heartbreaking to him, Nas continues to offer his support and love to his new baby boy and his mother."

Nas' lawyer has confirmed the 35-year-old rapper was not permitted to be in the delivery room as his son entered the world.

No other details have been released at the time of writing.

Kelis filed for divorce from Nas in April citing "irreconcilable differences".

In June, it was claimed Kelis was asking for funds for stem cell storage for their baby, to "to bank the baby's blood when he is born. The banking is the collection and storage of the stem cells found in the baby's umbilical cord".

She was also seeking US$20,000 towards the cost of "purchasing strollers, cribs and other baby supplies" for their two homes, an apartment in Manhattan and a house in Los Angeles and money to pay for a baby nurse, nanny and other staff.

In court papers, she put the unborn baby's expenses at $80,000 a month and insisted she was reliant on money from Nas, whose last record deal was worth a reputed $11 million.

Nas has since disputed the claims, insisting he "did not receive even half that amount".

Kelis and Nas met at an after-party hosted by P Diddy for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.

They got engaged a year later and married in Atlanta in 2005.

A source said: "It would be a surprising decision to make so soon after the arrival of their twins. Having the babies born healthy and happy was a dream come true, so it's strange that they might have to spend some time apart at this stage.

Sarah is determined for her twins - who were born using a surrogate mother - to grow up away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The 44-year-old actress has already purchased a 5.2 million nine-bedroom house in Brooklyn, where she believes the children will enjoy a quieter life.

The source added to Look magazine: "Sarah clearly loves Manhattan, but she has three children now. It might be better for them to grow up somewhere calmer where they can play in the park and feel safe, rather than in the madness of Manhattan.

"But Matthew loves their townhouse in Manhattan because it's close to his work on Broadway. He's currently in negotiations to perform in an off-Broadway theatre production and it wouldn't make sense for him to commute into town every day for work."

Chris Brown has issued a public apology for beating up his former girlfriend, singer Rihanna.

The R'n'B star said he was "truly, truly sorry", adding that what he did was unacceptable and that he had apologised to his victim "countless" times.

He is due to be sentenced on August 5, having pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna just hours before the pair were due to perform at the Grammy Awards in February.

The attack left her with heavy bruising and a "mouthful of blood" according to police reports.

Brown is expected to avoid jail time when he is sentenced, with a recommendation of six months of community service and probation.

He was arrested on February 8, hours after a party in Los Angeles.

According to an affidavit filed by an LA detective, the attack happened in a car when the Umbrella singer checked Brown's mobile phone and found a text message from another woman.

Detective De Shon Andrews wrote that Brown attempted to push Rihanna out of the vehicle before punching her repeatedly. He also bit her ear, the affidavit stated.

He then allegedly threatened to kill her when she pretended to phone her assistant to get police help.

According to the detective, the alleged assault left Rihanna with blood inside her mouth. Brown is also alleged to have tried to choke her.

Following the attack, pictures showing Rihanna's bruised and swollen face were leaked on to the internet.

It led to a spectacular fall from grace for Brown, who had been noted for his clean-cut image.

During a two-minute video on his website, the singer said his lawyer had advised him not to comment on the issue, but he now felt compelled to apologise directly to fans.

He said: "I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again, but unfortunately I can't.

"I have told Rihanna countless times and I am telling you today that I am truly, truly sorry.

"What I did was unacceptable - 100%. I can only ask and pray that you forgive me."

Brown added: "I have let a lot of people down, I realise that. Nobody is more disappointed in me than I am."

Gloria Gaynor kicked off the gala at the majestic Radio City Music Hall, in the heart of Manhattan, with a rousing performance of her 1978 disco hit "I Will Survive."

Celebrities on the performance list included Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and the first lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, as well as Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, Lil' Kim, Gloria Gaynor, the Soweto Gospel Choir and African artists Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal and Sipho Mabuse.

But the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize winner, whose health is increasingly fragile, is not attending.

Organizers hope that "Mandela Day" will become an event observed around the world paying tribute to the South African leader's accomplishments.

The model-turned-singer Bruni-Sarkozy, who said she would stop performing publicly after marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy, agreed to sing Saturday only because the groups organizing the gala carry out AIDS-prevention work.

Bruni-Sarkozy's brother died of the illness, and she is an ambassador for international funds fighting AIDS.

France's first lady arrived in New York late Thursday along with her husband, who held a working lunch with Ban at the French consulate on Friday -- the only work-related meeting on the French first couple's brief US visit.

The pair is scheduled to return to Paris immediately after the concert.

SACRAMENTO, CA - In a statement on a web site dedicated to Scott Peterson's appeal, the Peterson family children are allegedly asking for donations to help fund the fight.

According to the statement, Scott Peterson's parents have exhausted their financial resources by paying for their son's defense and appellate attorneys for the past six years.

Peterson will receive some state money to help cover investigative costs, but the site said the children believe they will need to raise appoximately $95,000 to cover the rest of the costs.

The money will reportedly be used to complete forensic testing, hire experts to review evidence and hire investigators to speak with key witnesses.

In the statement, the family writes, "With your contribution to the Peterson Family fund, the investigation will be able to move forward uninterrupted, the burden to pay for it will be lifted from our parents, and we will be one step closer to the priceless freedom of our innocent brother."

Peterson is on death row at San Quentin State Prison. He was convicted in 2004 of murdering his pregnant wife and their unborn child.

The statement goes on to read, "Your help today will bring us one step closer to getting Scott granted a new trial and finding justice for Laci and Conner."

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery on his broken left foot next week and may miss all of next season before coming back for a training camp that doesn't begin until October 2010.

The team's announcement Friday signals that the 7-foot-6 Yao doesn't plan on retiring, but it doesn't appear like the seven-time All-Star will be around to help them next season, either.

"While no timetable has been set for his return to action, Yao is expected to be available for the team's training camp in 2010," the Rockets said. That camp is in October.

The 28-year-old Yao chose a surgery that will involve a bone graft to promote bone regeneration, the team said. He's also hoping to reduce the arch in the foot by realigning and restructuring the bones.

John Huizinga, Yao's agent, did not immediately return a phone message, and nor did Yao issue a statement. Yao told the Xinhua News Agency this week that he planned to "fully recover" and had no plans to retire.

The decision for surgery was expected. The Rockets applied for a disabled player exception from the NBA a few weeks ago, betting that their center will miss next season as he recovers. The NBA agreed that Yao's return is unlikely and approved the request, freeing up about $5.7 million that the Rockets used to sign free agent Trevor Ariza from the Lakers.

Houston has also scrambled to find a center since free agency began and this week acquired 6-foot-11 David Andersen in a trade with Atlanta.

So much for Grissom and Sara's happy ending!

Less than a year after walking off into the sunset jungle with leading man William Petersen, Jorja Fox has inked a deal to return to CSI as Sara for multiple episodes -- sans Grissom.

According to executive producer Carol Mendelsohn, Fox will reappear in the Sept. 24 episode when viewers will "discover where life has taken Sara Sidle and what brings her back to the CSI team in Las Vegas."

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour just turned deadly.

Tragedy struck in Marseille this morning, when the roof of a massive stage being crafted for the Material Mama's upcoming concert collapsed on several workers, leaving one dead and seven injured.

Madonna was rehearsing her show in Udine, Italy, when the incident occurred, but wasted no time in sending her heartfelt condolences to everyone involved in the collapse at France's Velodrome Stadium.

"I am devastated to have just received this tragic news," she said.

"My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families, along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."

The sold-out Marseille concert stop, scheduled for Sunday, has since been canceled.

There's been no official word yet on what caused the stadium's roof to collapse, though firefighters told the Agence France-Presse that the roof became unbalanced as it was being lifted by four cranes.

One of the cranes reportedly fell over, crashing onto the stage below.

Marseille city councilor Maurice Di Nocera, meanwhile, told France-Info radio that the roof was roughly two-thirds complete when it began "shaking and collapsing," before gradually falling on the workers just after 5 p.m. local time. He credited the gradualness of the event with allowing several people to flee before its collapse.

"Fortunately, it didn't collapse too quickly, as there would have been quite a few victims," he said.

According to the AFP, up to a dozen people were initially trapped when the structure, which has since been barricaded by emergency workers, first collapsed.

All of the injured workers were immediately taken to local hospitals. Two were listed in very serious condition, while the others suffered fractured bones. None of their identities has yet been released.

Desperate to rescue the Emmy broadcast from last year's near total ratings collapse, the Television Academy approved two major changes. It (and CBS) chose the well-liked and now once again Emmy-nominated star of How I Met Your Mother to host the show, in hopes he'll pull in younger viewers and restore some critical luster after last year's reality quintet debacle.

And they tweaked the voting rules — expanding some categories from the usual five nominees, eliminating judging panels in favor of a straight popular vote — in an attempt to squeeze a few higher-rated shows in to what had become a very niche mix.

Despite their leaders' best (or some would say worst) efforts, the voters once again produced a slate of nominees that in most cases boils down to a competition between the hardly watched and the not-watched at all. Outside of some important nominations for Lost, House, The Mentalist's Simon Baker, Two and a Half Men's Charlie Sheen and (hallelujah!) The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons, actual hits in the major categories are so few, they don't even count as far between.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. The Emmys should be based on quality, not popularity — and while an Emmy broadcast built around shows such as 30 Rock, Mad Men and Breaking Bad may not be a big draw, one that ignored them would not be worth watching at all.

And yet, in their race to embrace the small and peculiar — and, perhaps, in their ingrained Hollywood crowd desire to appear hipper than the room — the voters seem to be rejecting better shows just because they're bigger. It's as if popularity, which by all rights should be a neutral factor, has somehow become a negative one.

How else to explain a voting procedure that stretches the series categories to seven nominees and yet skips TV's best and hottest comedy, CBS' Big Bang Theory? And for Flight of the Conchords, no less, a cult non-hit that pleases a very devoted very few and perplexes everyone else.

That's a very bad decision — but this is not, overall, a bad year for the nominations as a whole. There are always things we'd change, but the list is interesting and quirky, a description that fits any that makes room for Weeds, Family Guy and Sarah Silverman as well as Bob Newhart and Ian McKellen. If nothing else, it beats the general Emmy norm of dull and predictable.

Well, some things are predictable. It's still nearly impossible for a freshman series to get noticed, which may explain why True Blood, Fringe and No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency were ignored, outside of CCH Pounder's excellent guest star spot on Ladies'. The only two major nominees to break that freshman curse were Bakerand Toni Collette for United States of Tara.

As for other standard patterns, it's usually easy to get an Emmy nomination if you have an Oscar — though that didn't help Blood's Anna Paquin. It's even easier to get an Emmy nomination if you've already had an Emmy nomination — though that didn't help Jeremy Piven, a three-time winner whose bad Broadway behavior may have annoyed actors in Los Angeles as much as it annoyed actors in New York.

And it's easiest of all if you fall into that rare category of actors whom the voters love beyond reason and measure. No doubt Mariska Hargitay is a good actress and lovely person, but it's hard to explain why she has been nominated six years running — bucking better network shows and the academy's own fondness for cable dramas.

Speaking of academy over fondness, as good as 30 Rock is, it doesn't deserve a record-setting 22 comedy nominations. And on the flip side, how do you leave Big Love out of every other category — from acting to hairstyling — and yet nominate it for best drama? So what exactly was so good about it?

As in any year, there are the inevitable snubs, some more egregious than others. Many will mourn the lack of final-season love for The Shield, Battlestar Galactica and Jay Leno's Tonight Show, but I'm not among them. Instead, any grieving here will be reserved for 24, Rescue Me, Friday Night Lights, Pushing Daisies, True Blood, No. 1 Ladies, Big Bang, The New Adventures of Old Christine, So You Think You Can Dance and Fringe's John Noble.

Still, rather than dwell on who was left out, let's be happy for some of the more unexpected inclusions. In addition to Parsons, Baker and Pounder, it was particularly nice to see the nominations for Daisies' Kristin Chenoweth, Bad's Aaron Paul, Rescue Me's Michael J. Fox and 24's Cherry Jones and Kiefer Sutherland— even if Sutherland's was for the movie.

It's the Emmys. The surprise is when it works, not when it doesn't.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of Michael Jackson fans will crowd into downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday for a star-packed memorial to the King of Pop whose sudden death nearly two weeks ago shocked the world.

Pop music singers Mariah Carey, Usher and Jennifer Hudson will mix with R&B veterans Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder while sports stars like Kobe Bryant and other celebrities such as Brooke Shields also are expected to turn out.

Some 18,000 fans and friends will crowd into the Staples Center sports arena and a nearby, overflow theater for the two-hour ceremony memorializing pop star Jackson, who died June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles mansion.

Police estimate more than 250,000 people will cram onto the sidewalks outside the arena to pay their final respect to the "Thriller" singer and one-time member of Motown legends the Jackson 5, who was 50 years-old when he died.

"This is certainly a momentous occasion that is probably as big, if not bigger than, when Elvis (Presley) passed away," said Steve Howard, a resident of Glendale, California, who won a ticket in an online lottery.

"The impact he had on American music and world music crossed all boundaries," said Howard, who expects the service to feature performances by Jackson's friends and fellow singers, along with eulogies for the fallen pop star.

Two people who will not be there are Jackson's ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, who said on Monday her attendance might be a distraction, and long-time Jackson friend actress Elizabeth Taylor, who said she was asked to speak but was too overcome by grief.

Media reports have said Jackson is expected to be buried in a private family service in Los Angeles ahead of the memorial, but a family spokesman declined to comment on that service.

Questions persist over who will pay for police security and other services such as sanitation required for such a massive gathering. Cost estimates were hard to come by, but Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine estimated as much as $2.5 million.

Like other cities, Los Angeles is strapped for cash in the current recession, and people have complained that public money should not be used for what is, in some ways, a private event.

Still, acting Mayor Jan Perry has said police and other agencies have contingency budgets for events such as this.

About 1.6 million people registered to be among the 8,750 who won two free tickets to the event, and police expect many who did not win tickets to show up outside.

The memorial will be televised live on major U.S. networks, as well as streamed on the Internet.

Landon Donovan's brilliant left-footed shot against Brazil in last week's Confederations Cup Final ranks as one of the best start-to-finish goals in United States soccer history. The moment also cemented Donovan's status as the top U.S. player and its unquestioned leader.

And yet that strike pales in comparison to the shot Donovan took at David Beckham, the anointed savior of Major League Soccer, global icon and, as it turns out, a primadonna who would make Barry Bonds blush.

Donovan reveals a different side to his famous Los Angeles Galaxy teammate in The Beckham Experiment authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl. We learn that not only is Beckham something of a cheapskate and seemingly out of touch with reality but one of the world's most famous athletes comes off as a bad teammate who doesn't take his part-time gig in America very seriously. Basically, he comes across as shallow as his wife — Posh Spice — is skinny.

"When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing," the book quotes Donovan as saying. "He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well. Somewhere along the way….he just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-uh, I'm not doing it anymore."

Donovan suggests that if Beckham, who is scheduled to make his 2009 MLS debut in 11 days against the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium, deserves to be benched if his attitude doesn't improve.

From what I've seen and heard from Donovan in the past he seems like a straight shooter. Not to mention that his performance on the field the last two months has been nothing short of inspiring. And I'm sure everything he says about Beckham is dead-on.

But Donovan is also wrong. The MLS stills needs Beckham more than he needs it. If you don't believe in Beckham's impact just watch what will happen to attendance around the league once the man with the golden right foot begins playing.

Beck's one-time only appearance in the Metropolitan area on July 16th will be the last time the Red Bulls matter again until the club finally opens its beautiful stadium in Harrison, N.J. next season.

In our sporting culture we embrace stars whether it's Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriquez or Tom Brady. No one in the MLS, and that includes Donovan, is bigger than Beckham. The sooner Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney arrive on our shores the better.

Donovan's heart is in the right place; he wants to hold Beckham accountable and give his team every chance to win. But he's fighting a losing battle. Beckham came here two years ago for the money, to have dinner parties with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and to sit courtside at Lakers game. And on those rare occasions Beckham will play soccer as well. We get that. And so should Donovan.

John, who’s been hobbling around on a crutch ever since he injured his foot on the sets of Hook Ya Crook , became the butt of Katrina’s joke when he was asked the cause of his injury.Katrina replied on John’s behalf: “Well we had a fight, but since I am a little stronger this is what happened to his leg. If he picks a fight with me again, the same thing will happen to his other leg also.”

John took the joke sportingly and said the doctors have advised him not to put weight on his injured leg for two more weeks.

Speaking about the film, the actors said ‘New York’ is basically about the bonding between three friends while 9/11 forms the backdrop of their story.
